SEX
AND RELATIONSHIPS IN AUSTRALIA: Findings from the Australian Study of Health
and Relationships A recent survey (2001-02) of 19,000
Australians studied the sexual health and relationships of men and women between
the ages of 16-59 years. They were asked questions about
their sexual health behaviours, attitudes and knowledge. Some of the results are
listed below: Sexual Activity Most
people were frank about their sex lives in the study. The
majority of young people in their final year of school have begun having sex.
This shows the importance of sex education for primary aged children is vital.
As parents are the natural sex educators of their children, they should be responsible
for how this sex education happens. LoveLife Plus assists
parents of preschool aged children to become comfortable talking to their children
about the facts of life early so that they can give relevant information as needed
and according to the developmental needs of their children. See website SexTalk
for Parents.
Relationships
Most people surveyed
found sex extremely pleasurable and that it gave them high levels of emotional
satisfaction. The majority agreed that having sex is important to well-being. Self Loving and Pleasuring A
significant proportion of people surveyed had masturbated in the past year and
a substantial minority of Australians watch X-rated films, use sex toys and visit
internet sex sites. Sexual Difficulties A
large proportion of Australians studied experience some form of sexual difficulty
either from lack of information or failure to enjoy their sexuality. (Figures from the Australian Study of Health
and Relationships) |
